LAGOA DO FOGO TOUR – “ENERGY VOLCANO”

DESCRIPTION:

After pick-up at your hotel or accommodation (free service between the cities of Ponta Delgada, Lagoa and Ribeira Grande), from 9:00 until 9:20, or in the afternoon between 14:00 and 14 : 20, we start the half-day Lagoa do Fogo circuit, “Energetic Volcano”.

The first stop of our excursion will be at the Ceramics Vieira factory in Lagoa, (visit available from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm), founded in 1862 and already in the fifth generation of the same family. Here you can see the production of earthenware using traditional methods for over 150 years.

Returning to the path and towards the second highest point of the island of São Miguel, at 900 meters altitude, is the viewpoint of Pico da Barrosa, from where you can see the north coast with its city of Ribeira Grande and the coast. south with the city of Ponta Delgada, as well as all the incredible Lagoa do Fogo crater and its remnants of its last eruption in 1563.

Going down the north coast, the next stop will be at the Lagoa do Fogo viewpoint to admire this 30-meter-deep nature creation, where its elevation level in relation to sea level is at 334 meters and with its deep geothermal reservoir temperature at about 800 mt. depth and temperatures between 220º and 250º used to produce about 42% of São Miguel’s electric energy, through Geothermal Power Plants.

Continuing the half-day guided tour to Lagoa do Fogo, optional next stop for visit, will be at the Caldeira Velha Environmental Interpretation Center. (Entry not included, available by choice or at customer’s expense).

Next stop, it will be at the Mulher de Capote liqueur factory or at its store in Ribeira Grande city center for a taste of tasty liqueurs.

Last visit of your tour will be the historic center of Ribeira Grande.
