Fabulous private tour We joined this tour on disembarking from our cruise ship and looking for a company to show us around the island on our stop over. We were approached by a number of taxi drivers and other tour companies, so we chose at random, a most fortunate choice! We gathered a group of 8 people for a private tour in a very comfortable, and immaculately clean, air conditioned minibus.
Our driver/guide was Joao (John) was immensely proud of his island and was enthusiastic in telling us about the history and natural beauty of Sao Miguel.
He took us to a number of view points, lakes (including the twin lakes), a small town where we stopped for coffee. On returning to Ponta Delgarda he showed us some of the main points of interest and advised us on the best places to eat and where to buy souvenirs at the best prices. All of which information was spot on. John told us that the tour would take 2.5hrs, in fact it was nearer to 3hrs. He returned us to the quayside at the end of the tour.
I would have no hesitation in recommending this company. And the island was beautifull.

Azores – Just Gorgeous! Azores Dream Tours highly recommended – ask for Miquel! Firstly – if you are going to The Azores on a Transatlantic Cruise – consider yourself very fortunate! This place is gorgeous! Dont just get off the ship and go into Ponta Delgada because you will miss most of what this place has to offer. We had booked this tour a year in advance with another company – Belazorica and confirmed with the contact before going. When we arrived in the Port, we had to wait for buses to take us to town as you need a special licence for tour operators to get onto the dock. When we finallly got into Ponta Delgada we were met by Miquel Correá who was holding a sign with our name on it. He works for Azores Dream Tours and apparently as there was 2 ships in port – the tour companies were very busy and they help each other out (therefore we were handed to Azores Dream Tours by Belazorica) We had arranged for a private tour for the 6 people in our group and ended up with another couple. Anyway, that explained..we consider ourselves very lucky to have had Miquel as our Tour Guide and had a fabulous day with him. We were taken to Furnas lake – so beautiful, where we watched men taking big pots of Portuguese stew out of the ground where there is thermal springs under the earth which cook the food which is then taken to local restaurants and sold. Very interesting – I love taking photos and this Island is just a paradise for anyone who loves photography. Everyone seems to know Miquel and he laughs and jokes with people wherever we go. He’s good fun to be with!
Then we went to a spot where we saw the view of Pico De Ferro (I’m looking these things up now as its been a while and I’ve forgotten which view was which) Miquel takes photos of us with our cameras at each stop – thank goodness we have some that all our crowd is in. Then we went to a little river/canal with a thermal pool where the elderly people of the village go to talk and sit in the evenings, we all dip our hands in, let them dry, and see how soft our skin is after being in the water. Then we go to a village called (I think) Caldinas with more thermal springs and then to a tap on the side of the road which is spring water and we all have a taste of the cool, sparkling water.
Miquel buys us a Portuguese bread each (bit like a thick pancake) which was delicious!
Fun to watch him barter with the shopkeeper who gives in to Miquel eventually and accepts his price.
Then its off along the picturesque coastline and over the mountains where we stop at a Tea Factory where we all get a free tea sample and buy a Portuguese Tart (gotta have one in Portugal) Miquel comes back with a complimentary photo of all of us next to his car (I’ll post it) and a CD which I havent had tme to look at yet. How did he manage to do all that in 1/2 hour?? Anyway, we buy some tea to take back on the ship and some lovely hand made soap for 4 Euro. I highly recommend if you go there you buy the soap – it smells amazing and lasted me the whole cruise.
Then we went to the Fire Lake (I may have these out of order) each view just so much more spectacular than the last. Finally we went to Sete Cidades. So glad we managed to fit that in – just beautiful. I’m sure I’ve missed things out in this review but if you want a really good tour for a reasonable price I wouldnt hesitate to recommend Miquel from Azores Dream Tours – it was a dream tour for us. Our friends and family are also impressed with the beautiful photos we took on our Azores visit. Would have liked longer at this Port.
Thanks Miquel for showing us your beautiful homeland.
